Dear UICC Members,

The World Cancer Congress has come but is not gone, because those of us fortunate to attend will hold the memories of all the knowledge gained, friends hugged, MOUs signed, reports launched, contacts made, and so much more; for a long time to come. It was a resounding success, and I commend the entire Management team, Sponsors and Congress committees. We look forward to an even more impactful outing in Hong Kong 2026.

An important announcement was made by President Jeff Dunn on the decision to restrict bids for the WCLS 2027 to LMICs. Again, this is a laudable signal of equity and inclusion from the UICC. Member organizations in the regions should endeavor to seal strong partnerships between themselves, and high income countries, to put together successful bids.
In that same vein, I extend my hand of partnership and restate my commitment to working with the president, board and all members, should you vote for me as President elect on October 8th. The trajectory of successes we have charted together must, and will continue.

My pledges to you were made after careful consideration and
dialogue with members. I have also considered my strengths,
and any antecedent achievements in drawing up this manifesto. I reiterate my intention work on;

Capacity Building for Community-Based Health Workers

Community health workers are often the first point of contact for patients in underserved regions. As the CEO of MCF, I have collaborated with governments and local and international partners to train these workers, equipping them with the skills and resources, such as the use of thermal ablators, gynocular etc., needed to provide high-quality cancer care.

Examples of these multi stakeholder capacity-building initiatives among others include:

  • Kebbi State Cervical Cancer Elimination Program
  • Medicaid Prostate Cancer Initiative
  • FLAC training for program officers

Education and Awareness Using Digital Technology

Public awareness is critical in the fight against cancer. Through targeted social media campaigns and virtual initiatives, I have successfully reached thousands of individuals across the world, dispelling myths and promoting cancer prevention and treatment.

Over the past six (6) years, I have organically built a combined following of over 500,000 individuals across four platforms.
Each year, the reach of my posts exceeds 3M people across the world.

Notably, 90% of my LinkedIn engagement this year has been focused on health and cancer-related content, further amplifying my impact in public health advocacy.

You can explore some of my educational content and awareness campaigns through my social media platforms listed below:

Amplifying Patient Voices, Especially those in areas of Conflict and humanitarian crises

Aside from their humanitarian need for the basics of life like food and water, patients in conflict zones and remote regions face significant barriers to accessing care. Using my capacity as chair of the governance and finance committee of the National Cancer Program, through advocacy, fund mobilisation, and negotiations, we now have the inclusion of survivorship in Nigeria’s National Cancer Control Plan. In addition, I lead our teams to support cancer patients in both urban and rural areas.

Our main support program at Medicaid Cancer Foundation is the patient access to care care:

Championing Childhood Cancer

70% of Children with cancer in LMICs are diagnosed late.
Following strong advocacy from stakeholders like me, Paediatric cancer is now included in the Nigerian Cancer fund. The first ladies against cancer initiative which I chair, has renovated and equipped a paediatric ward, partnered with BVGH to create educational materials for caregivers and health workers.

By working with members governments, organisations and partners, we can achieve more investment in paediatric oncology.

Promoting Global Equity in Cancer Research and Treatment

I am passionate about delivering equitable cancer care to all. Increasing Clinical trials and research is one way to achieve this. We have partnered with international organisations to produce situation reports and regularly supported early career researchers. We are currently involved in three trials that are providing African data for AI models.

In addition I am currently on the Impact review committee of IAEA, amongst others. Similarly, my advocacy led to the establishment of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), HPV vaccine introduction, Establishment of regional diagnostic centres etc., all of which have a positive impact on cancer control.

Fundraising for Advocacy Skill Building

I have led successful fundraising efforts, mobilizing millions of dollars to support cancer care and control, particularly in underfunded areas of LMICs. An example is the National Cancer Health fund which was established at $1.4million and benefited over 309 cancer patients.
My presidency will spearhead fundraising efforts from governments, financial institutions and philanthropic bodies.
Thank you for your continued belief in our mission and in me.
Remember, a vote for Zainab is a vote for a capable, interactive colleague, who has put in
the work required, and also represents a population that has never been given the chance to
lead the UICC. It is a vote that will make history, build bridges, foster greater unity, and
achieve progress in the UICC.

With my best wishes,
Zainab
